Razer has unveiled the ?Razer Edge?, the first gaming tablet designed for PC gamers by PC gamers. Originally announced at CES 2012 as Project Fiona, the Razer Edge will utilize technology from both Intel (3rd generation Intel Core processors) and NVIDIA (NVIDIA GeForce graphics) by way of a Windows 8 operating system (full specs below). Technospeak-translation: You'll essentially be able to play PC?games on this tablet, as if it were a PC?computer. For more details on the different Razer Edge modes, read on.
?When we decided to design a tablet from the ground up, we did it to create a phenomenal experience for mobile gamers. By combining the best of PC and console gaming with Windows 8, we?ve created a true gaming tablet,? said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder, CEO and creative director.
To determine the final specifications for the Razer Edge, Razer targeted gamers through a crowdsourcing initiative on its social media pages. Razer let the PC gaming community decide the chipset, weight/thickness, features, even the price.
?Clearly the community support the Razer Edge has enjoyed suggests we hit the mark. Now, we get to celebrate the reality of what was formerly a dream with the audience for which this groundbreaking tablet was made? said Tan.
You?ll be able to configure the Razer Edge in four different ways. Traditional Tablet mode for Windows 8 applications, movies, etc. Keyboard Dock mode for keyboard and mouse dependent titles. Gamepad Controller mode will turn the tablet into a mobile console using a fully programmable dual controller interface with analog sticks. Finally there is Docking Station mode. The Razer Edge can be docked in the Docking Station which serves as a full desktop and charging resource.? The Docking Station will also allow the Razer Edge to hook up to your TV and accept multiple gamepad controllers so you can play games with your friends (pictured below).
The biggest news here is popular PC games should run natively on the Razer Edge without the need to be ported, optimized or redeveloped. That?s killer news for people who just want to pick up and play upcoming PC games or popular PC games they may have missed.
The system will be available in two types: a standard Razer Edge and the Razer Edge Pro model. The base model is equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor, NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 64 GB SSD. The Razer Edge Pro comes with an upgraded Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 128 GB or 256 GB SSD.
The Razer Edge Pro will additionally be offered in a bundle package with a Gamepad Controller in both the 128 GB and 256GB SSD model.
Both models will be available Q1, with the Razer Edge starting at $999.
Will you pick up one of these bad boys when they drop in Q1? It?s a hefty price but if it does what it says it might be worth it. The specs are legit for a tablet. What do you think?
