Bears hire Marc Trestman: A look at Chicago's new head coach

As a CFL coach, Trestman led the Montreal Alouettes to two Grey Cup victories and was named the 2009 CFL Coach of the Year.

Early Wednesday morning, the Chicago Bears made it official that Marc Trestman would be the team's new head coach, marking the beginning of a very new era of football for the team.

Trestman, 57, is the eighth coach of the last 40 years for the Bears and is one of only two coaches during that span to not have defensive coordinator experience. The only other coach was Mike Ditka, a former NFL tight end who certainly valued defense during his time as coach.

Instead, Trestman brings the Bears something they've never had before: a coach with a wealth of experience as an offensive-minded coach. He also represents an experiment for the NFL, as there isn't a past example of a CFL hire among the coaching ranks currently. It certainly isn't as if Trestman is without NFL experience, though. In fact, the majority of his coaching career came as an assistant in the league.

After a collegiate career at quarterback with the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State University Moorhead, Trestman spent two training camps as a defensive back with the Vikings before turning his focus to coaching. By 1983, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Miami Hurricanes, where he coached Bernie Kosar to a season that culminated with a national championship.

Coaching quarterbacks is what Trestman continued to do with eight different NFL teams between 1987 and 2004, also serving as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders.

He didn't take over the reigns as head coach of a team until the Montreal Alouettes offered him the role in 2007. He certainly found success, as he led the team to two Grey Cup victories and was named the 2009 CFL Coach of the Year. So much success that the Indianapolis Colts interviewed Trestman for their head coaching vacancy in 2012 before electing to hire Chuck Pagano.

The Bears fired Lovie Smith from the head coaching position after a 10-6 season that wasn't enough to earn a playoff berth. The team finished No. 28 in total offensive yardage and has had just one team finish in the upper half of the league offensively since 2000.

Homeland Security still says no to Java

15 hrs.

The Department of Homeland Security says despite some fixes to Java, it continues to recommend users disable the program in their Web browsers, because it remains vulnerable to attacks that could result in identity theft and other cyber crimes.

The Computer Emergency Readiness Team, part of the DHS, first took the unusual step last week?of issuing an alert, warning users to disable Java, saying the program could be manipulated by criminals to trick users into visiting malicious websites that could infect their computers with malware, or allow criminals to steal personal financial data on users' PCs.

Oracle, maker of Java said on its security blog Sunday that it updated Java 7 for Web browers, fixing two vulnerabilities. The company also switched Java's security settings to "high" by default, which should make it more difficult for malware to run without the user knowing it.

Even so, security experts have since warned that?several critical security flaws?remain.

"All versions of Java 7 through update 10 are affected. Web browsers using the Java 7 plug-in are at high risk," said the Computer Emergency Readiness Team on its website:

This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered. To defend against this and future Java vulnerabilities, consider disabling Java in web browsers until adequate updates are available. As with any software, unnecessary features should be disabled or removed as appropriate for your environment.

For information on how to disable Java, you can learn more here.

Java is a computer language that lets software be written using one set of code that can run on any computer, no matter the operating system. "It?s required by some Web sites that use it to run interactive games and applications,"?writes?security?expert?Brian?Krebs?on?his?Krebs?on?Security?blog.

"Java is not as widely used as it once was, and most users probably can get by without having the program installed at all. I have long recommended that users remove Java unless they have a specific use for it. If you discover later that you really do need Java, it is trivial and free to reinstall it."

Sophos Security notes?that?understandably, some users mistakenly?think?turning off Java also turns off JavaScript, which controls the look and feel of Web pages.?

"Most modern websites make heavy use of JavaScript, so these people are worried that sites such as Facebook, Twitter ... will be pretty much useless if they follow our 'turn Java off'?advice," writes Paul Ducklin of Sophos Security on the company's blog?Wednesday.

"Turning off Java will not turn off JavaScript," he says.

Hyatt has expanded its portfolio of hotels in China with the opening of the Hyatt Regency Qingdao, in the Shandong province of China.

?Known as the ?Pearl of the Yellow Sea?, Qingdao?s location on the Shandong Peninsula, beside the Yellow Sea, is renowned for its natural scenery, beautiful coastline and pleasant climate. It is also recognized as an important economic hub and port city on China?s east coast.

Qingdao, a destination with a rich history, also is known for its seafood and its world-famous, and delicious, Tsingtao beer. It crowned China?s Most Liveable City in 2011 by China Institute of City Competitiveness.

?Hyatt Regency Qingdao is located in Laoshan district, Qingdao?s new business, commercial and entertainment center. It has direct access to Shi Lao Ren Beach, a almost two-mile stretch of yellow sand beachfront and azure waters.

?As the only upscale beachfront hotel in northern China, our urban resort truly offers the best of city convenience and resort-style indulgence. We look forward to bringing Hyatt?s world-class dining, hospitality and amenities to the beautiful beach city of Qingdao,? said Anthony Ha, general manager of Hyatt Regency Qingdao.

Hyatt Regency Qingdao offers 439 guestrooms, including 25 suites. All rooms feature views of the ocean or beach through floor-to-ceiling windows, set against a backdrop of the magnificent Laoshan and Fushan mountains. New exhibitions open at WVU's Mesaros Galleries to feature Chinese painting, ceramic sculpture

New exhibitions opening at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center?s Mesaros Galleries on Thursday (Jan. 17) include paintings by Youxian Zhang, one of China?s most famous painting masters, and ceramic sculptures by Robert ?Boomer? Moore from the WVU School of Art & Design faculty. Both exhibitions will be open through Feb. 21.

The Robert Moore exhibition is titled ?Just Add Water? and will be on view in the Laura Mesaros Gallery. The work includes ceramic and mixed media sculpture. Moore, who is assistant professor of ceramics in the WVU School of Art & Design, will present an artist lecture about his work at the opening on Thursday (Jan. 17) at 5 p.m., in Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (200A). The opening reception for both exhibitions will follow at 6 p.m. at the Galleries.

?My interest in water started about five years ago with my first trip to China,? Moore said. ?I had never traveled to a location where they told you not to drink the water. I was also told to use bottled water to brush my teeth. The dorms where I was staying shut the water off in the evening and it did not come back on until the morning, so if you wanted to shower or flush a toilet you had to wait. I?m a person who does not buy bottled water, but paying for water in China became a necessity. While in China, I also started to notice the water storage tanks, especially the personal tanks located on top of the homes.

?These situations made me realize how I take for granted that at home I can do things like shower, drink tap water, and play in the water at any time. The pieces in ?Just Add Water? reflect my experiences and ideas about water and are driven by ideas about consumption, purification, management and play. The work drives the viewer to think about this simple, yet critical, substance that many of us take for granted.?

Moore was born in Fargo, N.D., and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Montana State University-Bozeman in 1995 and his MFA from Utah State University in 1999. Upon completion of his MFA, Boomer held the position of Studio Coordinator and Instructor for nine years at Ohio University in Athens. He joined the faculty of the School of Art & Design at WVU in 2008.

Moore is a fellow of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Mont., and Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Newcastle, Maine. He has presented numerous workshops at schools and institutions across the nation. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in such venues as National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Clay National 2003, American Shino 2002 and The Fletcher Challenge 1998. His work can be viewed in many publications such as, The Ceramic Design Book, The Ceramic Glaze Handbook and Claytimes Magazine. In 2004 he was awarded an Ohio Arts Council?s Individual Artist Grant.

Youxian Zhang?s exhibition is titled ?Youxian Zhang: Painting on Paper? and will be on view in the Paul Mesaros Gallery. He is professor of art and director of the Fine Art College of Nanjing Arts Institute in China, where the WVU School of Art & Design has a summer painting program.

Zhang specializes in figure, landscape, flower and bird painting and is one of China?s most famous painting masters. He has had solo exhibitions at Nanjing Normal University, Shanghai Arts Museum, Jiangsu Arts Museum and Xiamen Arts Institute. He has been a visiting professor at Xiamen Arts Institute and at China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He has also exhibited his works in Germany and is the author of numerous books on Chinese landscape, flower, bird and figure painting.

WVU painting professor Naijun Zhang is a graduate of the Nanjing Arts Institute and currently conducts a WVU summer painting program at the institute. The program provides an opportunity for students to study landscape painting in Chinese Ink style in Nanjing and Tangka Style in Tongren, with extensive traveling to major historical and artistic sites throughout China.

Managed and programmed by Curator Robert Bridges and the WVU School of Art & Design, the Mesaros Galleries organize a diverse and exciting schedule of exhibitions throughout the year. The galleries are committed to showing experimental work that is innovative both in terms of media and content. The Mesaros Galleries and the WVU School of Art and Design also host contemporary artists of important or growing reputation who work in all media in the Lecture Series.

All Mesaros Galleries events, including art lectures, exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.

Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, from noon to 9:30 p.m. The galleries are closed Sundays and University holidays. Special individual or group viewing times may be arranged upon request.

Increasing number of suicides sparks concern in U.S. military

Hundreds of U.S. soldiers committed suicide in 2012, and government officials are at a loss to explain why.

As many as 349 service members killed themselves last year despite an array of counseling and support programs offered members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, according to Cable News Network (CNN).

That number exceeds the number of service members killed last year in Afghanistan, where tens of thousands of U.S. troops still battle the Taliban insurgency.

?We?ve said for many years now how deeply concerned we are about the tragedy of suicides in the military and we recognize that the numbers are going up,? Navy Capt. John Kirby said last year.

?If you just compare this year?s numbers -- compared to 10 years ago, they?ve doubled,? he said, "And each one is a tragedy.?

The Defense Department did not keep close track of military suicides until 2001, and the 2012 total includes suicides of reservists in addition to soldiers in combat.

In 2012, the Army reported 182 suicides and suspected suicides, an increase of 16 from the year before, while the Navy reported 60, the Air Force reported 59 and the Marines reported 48, CNN said.

All of the totals were increases over the previous year.

Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon PanettaLeon Panetta has called the rising suicide rate a crisis, and has pressed military commanders to keep a closer watch on the mental health of those under their commands.

?Leaders throughout the chain of command must actively promote a constructive command climate that fosters cohesion and encourages individuals to reach out for help when needed,? Panetta said in a memo issued in May 2012.

Toward that end, Panetta's memo also said his department had created a new Suicide Prevention Office to coordinate training and programs, CNN said.

In recent years, the Army and Navy have taught "resiliency" to troops to better prepare them for stress, but experts say they have not been able to find a direct link between suicides and combat stress.

A non-military group, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), which offer grief support programs, told CNN it gets eight to 10 cases a week of people seeking help to deal with the suicide of a service member.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss of life, and renew our commitment to support the military families left behind who are grieving the deaths of service members by suicide," said Bonnie Carroll, the founder of TAPS.

Before founding the group, she was co-chair of a Department of Defense task force on suicide prevention in the armed forces, CNN said.

Exclusive: Morgan Stanley to defer high-earners' bonuses - sources

Morgan Stanley is deferring bonuses for all employees who make more than $350,000 annually and whose bonuses are at least $50,000, one of the sources said. The source said the deferral does not apply to retail brokers.

The long deferral in cash payouts for high earners is unusual, but more banks will likely follow suit, said Joe Sorrentino, managing director of Steven Hall & Partners, a New York-based executive compensation firm.

"Many investors should be pleased by this, but employees might not be." Sorrentino said.

Deferring compensation can ensure that bankers and traders do not receive high pay for transactions that generate near-term profits and longer-term headaches. Morgan Stanley Chief Executive James Gorman said in June that the bank wants to reward employees in a way that helps bank shareholders.

Investors have been pressing Morgan Stanley to rethink its compensation practices for years. A Wall Street Journal report on Tuesday said that a hedge fund that invests in Morgan Stanley was focusing on executive pay at the bank.

Details about 2012 bonuses will be communicated to employees on Thursday, the day before the bank posts fourth quarter earnings, said the sources, who asked not to be named because the matter is not public.

Mark Lake, a Morgan Stanley spokesman, declined to comment.

The new bonus plan will paid out half in cash and half in stock. High earners will receive 25 percent of their cash bonus in May, another 25 percent in December, another 25 percent in December 2014, and the final 25 percent in December 2015, according to two of the sources.

For the stock portion, 25 percent of the equity award will be paid out at the end of this year, 25 percent at the end of 2014, and the final half at the end of 2015, the sources said.

Employees who make less than $350,000 annually and whose bonuses total less than $50,000 will receive their full cash bonuses in February, one of the sources said.

Morgan Stanley and other big banks have been deferring more compensation in recent years. For 2011, Morgan Stanley employees who made more than $250,000 annually got deferred bonuses with a $125,000 cap on cash bonuses. Cash bonuses were distributed over a two-year period, while equity was given over a three-year period.

Some smaller banks are trying to attract more talent by deferring less. Jefferies Group, for example, is paying its employees bonuses all in cash.

Since taxpayer bailouts of large financial institutions in 2008, Wall Street bonuses have gotten an intense amount of public scrutiny. On Tuesday, Goldman Sachs Group Inc scrapped plans to delay paying bonuses to employees in Britain by two months. The plan, which would lower tax bills for those people, set of a firestorm of criticism from government officials.

INVESTOR PRESSURE

Morgan Stanley is trying to cut costs in a weak business environment that has hurt its ability to meet performance goals for two key units - bond trading and wealth management.

Several years ago, the company outlined a plan increase its trading market-share in fixed-income, currency and commodities by 2 percentage points. So far, the firm has failed to reach that goal, partly because of a ratings downgrade by Moody's last summer and an aggressive plan to cut exposure to complex products that require more capital.

In its wealth management division, Morgan Stanley has backed down from a target for a pretax profit margin of 20 percent, and is working to reach a more moderate "mid-teens" target by this summer. Gorman has made a big bet on this business with a complicated deal to acquire Citigroup Inc's Smith Barney business.

Analysts expect Morgan Stanley to report a 17 percent decline in 2012 revenue and flat annual earnings, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, because of weak trading volumes and dealmaking activity.

Investors have begun pressuring the firm to cut compensation, typically the biggest expense on Wall Street.

Reuters reported in October that top shareholders meeting with Morgan Stanley executives had demanded to know why the bank could not cut compensation to just 30 percent of revenue, down from current levels above 40 percent.

Last week, Daniel Loeb, who runs hedge fund firm Third Point LLC, criticized board compensation at Morgan Stanley in a letter to clients. Loeb also has started to scrutinize how much Morgan Stanley pays its executives, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Representatives for Third Point and Morgan Stanley declined to comment.

Earlier this month, Morgan Stanley announced it was cutting 1,600 jobs to cut costs, following a 7 percent headcount reduction last year. That initiative comes in addition to the plan to cut $1.4 billion in costs from its wealth-management unit over the long-term.

Deferring cash compensation is one way to appease shareholders and cut costs, even if the bank still has to ultimately pay out the money, said Richard Lipstein, managing director with the recruiting firm Gilbert Tweed International.

"Given the short term nature of the markets, delaying costs makes you look good today and damned what happens tomorrow," Lipstein said.

Go visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

It's not a Hall of Fame, but it's a different kind of amazing that's a lot closer to home.

Thanks to the events of the first 22 years of my life, I wound up moving to northeastern Kansas. This results in me driving through Kansas City at least four times a year. Other than the building housing the Kansas City Star, it is not a visually impressive city. Growing up in Chicagoland spoiled me I guess. I wound up taking a different route home than usual back in December and wound up seeing an exit sign I had never noticed before instructing me to turn off I-70 and head to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. I was fortunate enough to be able to ignore the siren's song that day, as the museum happens to be closed on Mondays and I did not want to get back to Plainfield at 9:30 that night. But the seed had been planted and my return trip became planned around a temporary respite at 18th and Vine.

Until you hit the main drag, the neighborhood around the museum feels kind of like Bridgeport. Had my phone lied to me about where I was going? It wouldn't be the first time the little bastard sent me on a wild goose chase through KCMO. But the site of an Arthur Bryant's nearby reassured me to keep going. I rounded the corner, discovered that parking everywhere is free, and asked a man in a security jacket on the corner to point me to the museum, establishing the awkwardness that is asking an African-American man to point you towards a place with the word "Negro" in the name. I quietly asked to be pointed towards the baseball museum. He laughed and sent me happily on my way.

The first thing that greets you upon entry into the lobby is a multitude of signs informing you that any cameras you may have brought with you aren't making it through the lobby. I don't own a camera, but decided my cell phone would stay in my pocket as I'd rather not add this hallowed ground to the relatively short list of places I've been thrown out of, even though it would instantly be ranked number one in terms of classiness. After convincing the woman at the ticket booth that I was not interested in seeing the American Jazz Museum the same day, despite the discounted rate, I paid my $10 and walked through the door.

There is a baseball field to your left. You're essentially in the right field stands, staring out at the bronze statues of ten men playing a game. I started trying to guess who each statue was, hoping to eventually run into a plaque congratulating me on being able to guess the three easy ones. I stood next to the replica of Buck O'Neil and stared out at the field. The rest of your trip through the museum forces you to keep staring out at that field, but not be able to get on it. The sentiment and symbolism was not lost on me.

Bufzmpxj_medium

via mlb.mlb.com

So I started my trek through the building with a 15 minute video narrated by James Earl Jones about the Negro Leagues and the men that populated them. After that you start inching slowly along the walls, covering decades of not only baseball history, but American history as well. You read old newspaper articles and see more than a few ... we'll call them "insensitive" and be charitable ... drawings and cartoons of African-Americans playing our favorite sport. You're going to feel uncomfortable a few times, especially in the earlier exhibits. You'll likely get a little angry reading about Cap Anson and the generally awful ways he used his clout to keep integration at bay while he was a star. You'll read about the struggles the men faced even after Rube Foster organized the Negro National League.

But then something happens about halfway through the winding halls. The various leagues start booming in popularity. The Kansas City Monarchs become the Yankees of their "separate but equal" world. You start reading anecdotes about white owners of the teams fighting ignorance as best they can through their players. The Monarchs were once denied hotel service and food in a town they had already sold out all the tickets for their upcoming games. J.L. Wilkinson, owner of the Monarchs, responded to this information by stating that they may as well refund all of the tickets because the Monarchs sure as hell weren't going to be playing in such a place. Town policies were quickly amended and the Monarchs went on to play.

There is a section of wall dedicated to similar teams that weren't necessarily comprised of African-American players, like the House of David. In case your bad at picking up on things, they happened to be a Jewish barnstorming team. A team that would temporarily hire Satchel Paige and put him in a long red beard and let him be Satchel Paige. Just down the wall from this was an article describing a town that hosted a game between a team of African-American barnstormers and a squad of Klansmen. Yup. That was apparently a real thing. The people in the stands somehow acted like rational humans throughout it all and the Klansmen lost.

I kept walking while chuckling in amusement at that last item when World War II hit. Suddenly the walls became plastered with articles from newspapers all over the country filled with quotes about the hypocrisy of letting everyone fight in the war regardless of race, but stopping some from playing baseball because of their skin color. The familiar names start popping up: Branch Rickey, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella. Not enough Minnie Minoso for my blood, but I am horribly biased. There's a nice corner dedicated to the integration of baseball, proudly displaying the early adopters of the new way on the left wall, listing each team and their first African-American player and the year they joined their squad. Our White Sox were the sixth team to do so, third in the American League behind the Indians and the Browns. The right side of the wall shows the final eight teams, including the long holdouts like the Yankees and the Red Sox. A video plays while you're observing and it is considerably (and understandably) less than kind towards the Yankees and Red Sox. Then again, a team like Boston that took 12 years to finally integrate kind of deserves it.

This section was home to my two favorite quotes in the museum. The first came from then National League President and future commissioner Ford C. Frick when he was informed that the St. Louis Cardinals planned on striking instead of playing against the Brooklyn Dodgers squad that now featured Jackie Robinson. Frick did not care for this idea.

If you do this you will be suspended from the League. You will find that the friends you think you have in the press box will not support you, that you will be outcasts. I do not care if half the league strikes. Those who do it will encounter strict retribution. They will be suspended, and I don?t care if it wrecks the National League for five years. This is the United States of America, and one citizen has as much right to play as another.

The National League will go down the line with Robinson whatever the consequence. You will find that if you go through with your intention that you will have been guilty of madness.

The strike did not happen.

The second came from beloved future White Sox owner Bill Veeck, shortly after signing Satchel Paige to the Cleveland Indians on his 42nd birthday. A writer for the Sporting News did not care much for this move, decrying it as nothing more than a publicity stunt and assuring everyone that if Paige was a white man this signing would never have come close to even happening. To which Veeck, wit sharp as ever simply replied

"If Satch were white, of course he would have been in the majors 25 years earlier and the question would not have been before the house."

A sad thing happens shortly after you reach the integration section: dissolution. With all of the best players being signed to teams in the American and National Leagues, the teams across the various Negro Leagues could no longer remain competitive and by the 1960s, ultimately had all folded. The ultimate success story had ended. It's bittersweet reaching this part of the building. You've spent the past hour and a half or so falling in love with these leagues that ceased to be before you were born (for most people on here at least). And then because the country finally got its head out of its own ass, the leagues could no longer function.

You move on and find the Buck O'Neil exhibits, including a wall filled with tiny baseball plaques from people who made donations to the museum on Buck's 100th birthday. If you take the time to look for it, you'll find a familiar last name on the wall. I was tempted to sneak a picture, but I figured Jim would be happy enough just knowing it's there. Just past this is a stretch of lockers filled with jerseys and replicas of the Hall of Fame plaques from Cooperstown for all the players enshrined there. In a strange but fantastic moment, you happen upon a giant case of baseballs, all autographed by hundreds of men who played in the Negro Leagues, all of which have been donated by Geddy Lee. Yes, that Geddy Lee. It's confusing and amazing and I spent far too much time reading signatures.

And then it happens. You've run out of exhibits. You get ready to exit through the gift shop. But then you look up and realize how you have to get there: you finally get to walk onto the Field of Legends. Cool Papa Bell greets you in left field. You discover Oscar Charleston and Leon Day are the other two men in the grass. Buck Leonard, Pop Lloyd, Judy Johnson, and Ray Dandridge stand around the infield. Of course Satchel Paige is pitching to Josh Gibson, because who else would make up that battery? Martin Dihigo stands ready at the plate and you stand there wishing you were old enough to have seen this hypothetical game.

I had hoped there would be some Chicago American Giants memorabilia available in the gift shop, but all I could find was a poof-ball topped winter cap. I said my goodbyes and walked back to my car, headed home to Manhattan.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is not a Hall of Fame, as the building politely reminds you multiple times. It is a history museum, showing you all of the ugly that came with the past and then treating you to the beauty it finally became. It's not Cooperstown. There is almost nothing about the Chicago White Sox in the building. But if you like baseball enough that you regularly come to South Side Sox, you need to take a visit to Kansas City some time and spend a few hours walking around 18th and Vine.

The HSUS Releases Annual Ranking of State Animal Protection Laws

January?15,?2013

California retains first place; South Dakota holds last

The Humane Society of the United States, the nation?s largest animal protection organization, has released its fourth annual ?Humane State Ranking? report, a comprehensive analysis of animal protection laws in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The HSUS graded states on the strength of a wide range of animal protection laws, including public policies dealing with animal cruelty and fighting, pets, wildlife, equines, animals in research, and farm animals.

California earned first place for the fourth year in a row, while South Dakota remained in last place. Ohio was the most improved state, leaping ahead in the ranks by passing laws regulating puppy mills and the private possession of dangerous wild animals. To see the complete 2012 Humane State Rankings, click here.

?Members of The Humane Society of the United States want to know what their state lawmakers are doing to improve animal welfare. Our Humane State Ranking report demonstrates which states are falling behind important protections for animals, and which states are leading in the effort to create a more humane and civil society,? said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. ?Ohio made great progress, but the Dakotas are lagging badly and are clearly out of step with so much of the rest of the country when it comes to animal welfare policies. Animal protection matters to Americans, and our laws must line up with our values.?

California stayed on top for the fourth year in a row by passing a number of new laws, including a law banning the hound hunting of bears and bobcats. Other top states are Massachusetts (tied for second place) for passing a law allowing pets to be included in domestic violence protection orders, and banning gas chambers for euthanasia; Illinois (tied for second place) for passing a ban on shark fin products; Oregon (fourth place); New Jersey (tied for fifth place) for passing a horse slaughter ban; and Maine (tied for fifth place).

South Dakota earned the lowest score (51st place). Other states near the bottom include Idaho (50th place), Mississippi (49th place), North Dakota (48th place) and South Carolina (47th place).

South Dakota and North Dakota received especially low marks in part because they are the only two states in the country with no felony-level penalties for malicious acts of animal cruelty. North Dakota could have pulled ahead this year, but voters rejected a ballot measure to increase penalties for egregious acts of animal cruelty on the November 2012 ballot, keeping the state squarely at the bottom of the list.

In 2012, The HSUS helped pass 74 new laws and regulations to protect animals and helped to defeat more than 100 harmful measures.

The ranking was based on 75 different animal protection issues in 10 major animal protection categories including: animal fighting; animal cruelty; wildlife abuse; exotic pets; companion animals; use of animals in research; farm animals; fur and trapping; puppy mills, and equine protection.

Lee Harvey Oswald's apartment to be razed

By Amanda Guerra, NBCDFW.com

A piece of Dallas history will come crumbling down Monday.

The city plans to demolish an apartment building Lee Harvey Oswald lived in before he assassinated President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

The crumbling building, located at 600 Elsbeth, hasn?t been occupied for several years.??The woman who owns the building bought it with hopes of restoring the complex, but the city of?Dallas condemned the building back in 2011.

On Sunday evening, several people, including the building owner, local artists and nearby residents showed up to take wood or brick from the building.

One woman, who takes people on JFK assassination tours said she?s sad to see the building go.

?People are interested in it," said Freda Dillard. " I have people that come from all over the world to take these tours and they want to see everything, including this apartment building.?

"It?s very sad. Tomorrow [Monday] afternoon it?s going to be gone and that?s another piece of history.?

Oracle says Java patch fixes security problem

(AP) ? Oracle says it has released a fix for the flaw in its Java software that raised an alarm from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last week.

Late Thursday, the federal agency recommended that Internet users disable Java software in Web browsers to avoid potential hacking attacks.

Java allows programs to run within websites and powers some advertising networks. Users who disable Java may not be able to see portions of websites that display real-time data such as stock tickers, news, weather updates and ads.

Oracle says the patch was released Sunday. The company recommends that users update Java immediately. The patch sets Java's default security level to "high" so it prompts users and gives them a chance to decline malicious software before it loads onto their computers.

An Open Letter from Barack Obama to Louie Giglio

Last night I dreamt that I was reading The New York Times?and stumbled upon this open letter from the President to evangelical pastor Louie Giglio:

To my friend, Pastor Louie Giglio,

We share the essence of a common religious heritage. We both profess a faith in Jesus Christ, both call on God for direction and strength, and both believe that God calls us to care for the least of these. Yet we do not agree on all things, and you had the courage to form a friendship with me in spite of our differences.

You took a risk. Many of your fellow evangelicals look askance at anyone who cooperates with me. I?m sure there were some in your own congregation who disapproved. You had amassed enormous capital within the evangelical Christian community with the tens of thousands of young people who have attended your conferences and the millions who have enjoyed the messages and the music that have emerged from the Passion movement.?You risked that capital when you focused that movement on ending human trafficking, and risked it again when you formed a friendship and partnership with my faith-based office and with me. You visited the White House frequently?in 2012, and I have appreciated your prayers, your encouragement and your friendship.

My offices invited you to deliver the benediction at my inaugural, and you courageously accepted. Since I am so radioactive to many evangelical Christians, you endured some criticism for agreeing, as though your cooperation would anoint me with some veneer of evangelical approval. Yet you stood beside me and emphasized that we are all Americans, we are both believers, and we have many convictions and causes in common.

Then it happened. You have avoided speaking to hot-button issues in order to focus on saving the lost and rescuing the enslaved. Yet still?you came under attack for a sermon you preached nearly 20 years ago, where you identified homosexuality as sinful, held out the hope that same-sex desires can be transformed through the sanctification of the Spirit, and asked Christians to resist the activists? ?agenda of normalizing homosexuality. You were slandered as a bigoted, anti-gay extremist. I wanted to highlight your work fighting modern day slavery. Instead you were demonized. Americans who had never heard of you before the events of recent weeks have heard of you now, but they believe you are a preacher of hatred who cannot be allowed on the platform in the public square.

A few angry voices shouted you out of the court of public opinion and hanged you for your thought crime ? and I left you twisting in the wind. I know that you are not a man of hatred and intolerance. Yet I said nothing. I have hardly been a profile in courage, and for that I apologize.

I understand why many of my gay and lesbian friends find your comments offensive. They find the implication that they should ?change? offensive; they believe that any kind of pastoral counseling that seeks to retrain or restrain their sexual desires is destructive and doomed to failure; and they resent the implication that there is something insidious about their agenda. There?s also a great deal of pain that many have endured in families and churches that teach these things. So I do not condone your words. They do not represent my views.

But I also understand why so many evangelicals and social conservatives in general are upset that you were pressed out of the inaugural. They feel as though they have in you, pastor Giglio, a man of extraordinary integrity. Your one ?crime? is that you believe in the traditional Christian sexual ethic. If even you are not acceptable, for all your work to help the poor and the needy, if even you are only held up to be pilloried and slandered as hateful, then what hope do they have? What place is there for them, they wonder, in Obama?s America??

Evangelicals say that your freedom of conscience is being infringed; when does the price of holding your religious conviction become so costly that you?re religious freedom is no longer free? My gay and lesbian friends respond, ?Well, we wouldn?t let a preacher of racial hatred deliver the benediction, would we??

This is where I should speak a word to both sides. I want my evangelical friends to understand the hurt that resides in the LGBT community, and that LGBT?s see the wrongs committed against them as far greater than any wrong committed here against evangelicals. Evangelicals need to understand that and gain some perspective. Yet I want my LGBT friends to understand that creating a parallel between the belief that homosexuality is sinful on the one hand, and racial hatred on the other, is both false and destructive. It leaves no place for conversation. Gay activists chose to articulate their argument for gay rights as the equivalent of African Americans? fight for civil rights. Historically, of course, the two are enormously different. Blacks were actually enslaved for centuries, and effectively enslaved even in the Jim Crow South, in ways that gays have never been. The history of black-white relations in this country make the charge of racism absolutely explosive. And philosophically, it?s a category mistake to say that a belief is hateful. Beliefs may be wrong or right, justified or unjustified, harmful or helpful, but beliefs cannot be hateful any more than rocks can be loving.

Practically, however, and this is the most important point: paralleling the fight for gay rights with the fight for Civil Rights turns everyone who disagrees with us on the rightness or wrongness of homosexual relationships into a Bull Connor. And I know for certain that Louie Giglio is no Bull Connor. This, I believe, is what evangelicals were so upset about in this case and in the Dan Cathy/Chick-Fil-A case. They find it shocking that we have reached a point where anyone who believes gay sex is wrong or anyone who believes that marriage is ordained by God for the union of a man and a woman is ostracized and condemned as hateful, bigoted, and the equivalent of a racist.?

What I should have said is this: I know that you, my friend, Louie Giglio, love all people and believe that all people struggle with sin. Even though I don?t agree with your views (if they still are your views) on reparative counseling and the gay agenda, I know you are a man of compassion and integrity. So with this public letter I invite you back to the inauguration. We will have two pastors deliver the benediction, one who believes what you do and one who believes what I do. For, to quote my favorite blogger: neither side has a monopoly on good ideas or good intentions. Men and women of sound mind and heart stand on both sides of this issue, and we?ll need to work together to overcome the forces that threaten to tear us down or tear us apart.

Sincerely, your friend,?

Barack Obama

It was a sweet dream. Now it?s a prayer. It would, in my view, be a true profile in courage.

Less reaction to DTaP vaccine given in kids' thighs than arms

Jan. 14, 2013 ? Children age 12 to 35 months who receive DTaP vaccine in their thigh muscle rather than their arm are around half as likely to be brought in for medical attention for an injection-site reaction. So says a new study of 1.4 million children at Group Health and seven other Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) centers across the country, e-published on January 14 in Pediatrics.

"These local reactions are the most common side effect of vaccinations," said study leader Lisa A. Jackson, MD, MPH, a senior investigator at Group Health Research Institute. "But we have known relatively little about how to prevent them." Local reactions go away after a day or two, but they can be painful, and the associated redness and swelling can concern parents. This study focused on "medically attended" local reactions: ones that resulted in a visit to a doctor, nurse, or emergency room. Ideally, medically attended local reactions would happen less often than the current nearly one in 100 vaccinated children.

"Our findings support current recommendations to give intramuscular vaccinations in the thigh for children younger than 3 years," Dr. Jackson said. Since 2011, the U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended that intramuscular vaccinations be given to toddlers aged 12 to 35 months preferably in the thigh muscle (or in the deltoid muscle of the arm only if it's big enough) -- and to children age 3 years older in the deltoid muscle of the arm. But in practice, health care providers tend to vary in their choice of vaccine injection sites for children; and parents can influence that decision.

The research team also tracked local reactions in children age 3 to 6 years and from intramuscular vaccines other than DTaP, including inactivated influenza and hepatitis A. But they found no statistically significant differences between vaccinating in the thigh and arm in the older age group or for the other intramuscular vaccines.

Previous evaluations of local reactions after the fifth DTaP vaccine in children age 4 to 6 years found that vaccination in the thigh was linked to a lower risk of local reactions than was vaccination in the arm. Dr. Jackson also led an earlier study that showed that neither ibuprofen (Advil) nor acetaminophen (Tylenol) help prevent local reactions after that vaccine.

The current research followed children age 1 to 6 years who received intramuscular vaccines from 2002 to 2009 at the eight VSD sites: Group Health; Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in Boston; HealthPartners in Minneapolis; Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin; Kaiser Permanente Colorado in Denver; Kaiser Permanente Northwest in Portland; Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland; and Kaiser Permanente Southern California in Los Angeles. The VSD project is a collaborative effort between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Immunization Safety Office and 10 managed care organizations, including these eight (whose research institutes also happen to be members of the HMO Research Network).

This study was supported by the CDC (contract 200-2002-00732), through America's Health Insurance Plans.

QB Pachall finishes rehab, returns to TCU football

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Former TCU quarterback Casey Pachall has completed substance abuse rehabilitation and returned to the team.

Coach Gary Patterson says Pachall took part in team meetings Sunday and he looks great. School resumes Monday.

Patterson on Oct. 9 announced Pachall was leaving TCU for treatment. The junior starter days earlier was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Pachall in early 2012 admitted to police that he smoked marijuana and failed a team-administered drug test.

Patterson said the door would be open for Pachall to return following rehab. Stan Pachall says his son finished outpatient treatment last Thursday.

Pachall threw for 948 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception in TCU's first four games last season. The Horned Frogs finished 7-6.

Michigan State defeated TCU 17-16 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

'Extinct' whale found: Odd-looking pygmy whale traced back 2 million years

Extinct whale found? Well, sort of. Scientists have traced the lineage of the pygmy right whale back to an ancient family of whales called cetotheres, who were thought to be extinct.

By Tia Ghose,?LiveScience.com / December 19, 2012

The pygmy whale, a cetacean that looks radically different from all living whales, is actually the last living member of a group thought to have gone extinct 2 million years ago Credit:

The pygmy right whale, a mysterious and elusive creature that rarely comes to shore, is the last living relative of an ancient group of whales long believed to be extinct, a new study suggests.

The findings, published Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help to explain why the enigmatic marine mammals look so different from any other living whale.

"The living pygmy right whale is, if you like, a remnant, almost like a living fossil," said Felix Marx, a paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "It's the last survivor of quite an ancient lineage that until now no one thought was around."

Living fossil

The relatively diminutive pygmy right whale, which grows to just 21 feet (6.5 meters) long, lives out in the open ocean. The elusive marine mammals inhabit the Southern Hemisphere and have only been spotted at sea a few dozen times. As a result, scientists know almost nothing about the species' habits or social structure.

The strange creature's arched, frownlike snout makes it look oddly different from other living whales. DNA analysis suggested pygmy right whales diverged from modern baleen whales such as the blue whale and the humpback whale between 17 million and 25 million years ago. However, the pygmy whales' snouts suggested they were more closely related to the family of whales that includes the bowhead whale. Yet there were no studies of fossils showing how the pygmy whale had evolved, Marx said. [In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales]

To understand how the pygmy whale fit into the lineage of whales, Marx and his colleagues carefully analyzed the skull bones and other fossil fragments from pygmy right whales and several other ancient cetaceans.

The pygmy whale's skull most closely resembled that of an ancient family of whales called cetotheres that were thought to have gone extinct around 2 million years ago, the researchers found. Cetotheres emerged about 15 million years ago and once occupied oceans across the globe.

The findings help explain how pygmy whales evolved and may also help shed light on how these ancient "lost" whales lived. The new information is also a first step in reconstructing the ancient lineage all the way back to the point when all members of this group first diverged, he said.

Word Master Document to the rescue - Business Management Daily

There?s quite a bit of buzz about the benefits of co-authorship in Word 2010 when using SharePoint 2010. But what if you?re not using SharePoint? Sometimes what?s old can be new again. Master Documents in Word was a great solution when the power of the computer did not match the demands of the way we were using Word. A Master Document is a collection of links to other documents that can be viewed and printed as though it were a single document. So, how does this work?

Create the base documents

Generate a single document for each section of what will become your complete document. Even if one person is working on several sections, separating them out at this point will keep your document easier to manage and print later. Save them to a shared network drive or a document library on SharePoint. If neither of these is an option, and you have to send them out as email attachments, it might be best to save them back to a common location. You can include documents from different locations in a master document, but it might be more manageable if everything were in one place.

Produce the master document

Now, create another document and change to Outline view. You may either click on the View tab and click the Out??line button in the Document Views group, or click the Outline button in the Status bar. You?ll notice the Outlining tab appears to the left of the Home tab.

In the Master Document group, click the Show Document button. Now, you?ll notice that the Master Document group has expanded to include the Insert ?button.

Click the Insert button and locate the document you wish to include first, then second, and so on. Be sure to respond in the negative about creating additional styles by choosing no to all, when prompted. You?ll want to use only the style, structure and formatting of the Master Document.

At first, these ?subdocuments? will appear in ex??panded mode. In this mode, you can get an idea of what it will look like when it prints.

Click the highlighted Collapse Subdocuments button and you will now see a list of hyperlinks. Use the Navigation Pane if you?re in Word 2010 to easily rearrange the order of subdocuments.

You can now change the theme and rework the styles to suit your project. If styles have been used correctly in the subdocuments, changing the style for the document will change it in all the places that style is used.

Print

Before printing, make sure you have chosen to expand all subdocuments. Use print preview to make sure it lays out the way you like.? Changes made in the individual subdocuments by others will be automatically reflected in the Master Document. To make changes yourself, collapse the subdocuments and use Ctrl+Click to open the documents and make your changes.
