F1 : Conservative mayor flags air and noise hurdles for London Formula 1 Grand Prix

Thursday, 28 June 2012 16:31 London mayor Boris Johnson on Thursday could not guarantee the British capital will be able to host Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One race.

Formula 1 Chief Executive Ecclestone has said he is prepared to put up the money and promote a London street race.

Some immediately wrote off the plans as either a classic Ecclestone diversion or a publicity stunt.

But London mayor Johnson told the UK newspaper Express he is "broadly positive" about the plans.

"I am always interested in projects that attract jobs and bring growth," he said, insisting it will be important to find out if there is "a really good economic case" for the event.

Johnson added: "The question of air quality and noise impact will have to be looked at. I am broadly positive providing we can satisfy the air quality and noise issues."

(AP) ? Returning to the court where she won her first Grand Slam championship a year ago, Petra Kvitova overcame a shaky start and a late rain delay Tuesday to open her Wimbledon title defense with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Akgul Amanmuradova.

The fourth-seeded Czech fell behind 3-0 and 4-1 in the first set on Centre Court before running off seven straight games to take command against the 96th-ranked player from Uzbekistan.

After Kvitova squandered a match point at 5-3 in the second set, play was suspended and the covers rolled onto the court ? the first rain break of the tournament.

When play resumed half an hour later, it took just three minutes to wrap up the match. After Amanmuradova won the first two points to hold for 5-4, Kvitova closed out the match at love, hitting a service winner and two aces and forcing a backhand error.

"It was unbelievable to come back here as the defending champion," said Kvitova, who beat Maria Sharapova in last year's final. "In the beginning I think I was nervous ? first match on the grass it's always difficult to know what you can expect. I had a lot of mistakes and then I tried to play my game and go forward."

The 6-foot-3 Amanmuradova pushed Kvitova with her big serve, but lacked the consistency on her ground strokes and has now lost in the first round of all five Wimbledon appearances.

Following Kvivota on Centre Court was second-seeded and two-time men's champion Rafael Nadal, who faced Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. They were to be followed by No. 4 Andy Murray against former top-10 player Nikolay Davydenko.

On Court 1, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was paired against 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt, who has slipped to 202nd in the rankings and needed a wild card to enter Wimbledon this year.

A day after her sister was eliminated on Court 2, four-time champion and sixth-seeded Serena Williams was playing on the same court against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Playing his first match since having a medical procedure on his heart, 10th-seeded Mardy Fish of the United States served 24 aces and beat Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo of Spain 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (1) to reach the second round.

The 30-year-old Fish, who reached the quarterfinals last year, hadn't played a competitive match in 2? months after having an accelerated heartbeat. He played attacking, serve-and-volley tennis and piled up 63 winners against Ramirez-Hidalgo ? at 34, the oldest man in the field.

In early women's play, No. 12 Vera Zvonareva completed a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Germany's Mona Barthel in a match that had been suspended by darkness at one set apiece on Monday.

Francesca Schiavone, the 24th-seeded Italian, came from behind to overcome 18-year-old British wild card Laura Robson 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Schiavone, the 2010 French Open champion, received medical treatment after the first set for an apparent muscle problem. She was down 2-3 and 0-40 in the second set but saved the three break points and turned the match around against the 2008 Wimbledon junior champion.

In a men's match between two rising stars of the game, 21-year-old Belgian wild card David Goffin ? who reached the fourth round of the French Open and took a set off Roger Federer ? rallied from a set down against 19-year-old Bernard Tomic to beat the 20th-seeded Australian, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Rare Cancer Removed From Unborn Child

Unborn Fetus

? Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami

Doctors at a Florida hospital announced this week that they had successfully removed an extremely rare tumor from the mouth of a 17-week-old fetus.

According to BBC News reports published Friday, surgeons at the Jackson Memorial Hospital revealed that they removed an oral teratoma from Leyna Gonzalez while she was still in her mother Tammy's womb five months prior to her October 2010 birth.

The doctors added that the teratoma was so rare that it had only been seen once in 20 years at the medical facility. They used a local anesthetic, pushed through the protective amniotic sac around the fetus, and then used a laser to cut the tumor from the child's lips, the British news organization added.

The entire operation took slightly more than an hour to complete.

"They are her saviors. She wouldn't be here without them," 39-year-old Tammy Gonzalez said, according to Richard Luscombe of the Guardian. "You can imagine what goes through your head. 'What is this?' Nobody could really give me an answer because it's so rare."

"If she was ultimately delivered alive, there was no guarantee that she would be normal, she'd have a tracheotomy, numerous surgeries, she'd have deformities," she added. "I thought: 'There has to be a way to save her.' We started doing research, a lot of heartache and emotional distress. I asked my gynecologist if there's another way, if somebody could do surgery on her while she's inside."

Luscombe said that the Gonzalez family was referred to Dr. Ruben Quintero, a trailblazer in fetal medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Quintero told Tammy that no one had ever attempted to remove an oral teratoma in utero, but added that he was willing to attempt the surgery.

The procedure was completed using an ultrasound-guided endoscope, and when Leyna was born five months later, the only remnant of the operation was a tiny scar on her mouth, the Guardian reporter added.

"It was a decisive moment. We went ahead and cut the stem, and sure enough the tumor fell right out," Quintero, the director of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, said of the operation, according to Katie Moisse of ABC News. He added that Mrs. Gonzalez was "grateful that we offered her this chance... But we couldn't have offered her the chance if she hadn't had the courage."

20-month-old Leyna, who Tammy called her "little miracle child," is doing "perfectly fine," according to her mother.

Turkey calls for NATO meeting over Syria

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey is calling on NATO to discuss a response to Syria's downing of a Turkish jet in what Turkish leaders insist was international airspace. The incident has deepened the regional turmoil caused by the conflict in Syria, where reports Sunday said more than a dozen people had died in the latest clashes between rebels and government troops.

The plane wreckage was found Sunday in the Mediterranean at a depth of 3,281 feet (1,000 meters), Turkish state-run TRT television said. The pilots are unaccounted for.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the jet was on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities, not spying on Syria. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace Friday, but was quickly warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile inside international airspace when it was shot down off the coast of Latakia.

Syria insisted Saturday that the shooting was "not an attack" and that the plane had violated its airspace.

TRT reported Davutoglu had called for a special meeting of NATO on Tuesday to discuss Article 4 of the NATO charter in relation to Friday's incident. The article says member countries "will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened."

The plane's downing drew international concern, including from countries pressuring Syrian President Bashar Assad to step aside due to the bloodshed in his country over the past 15 months. Opposition activists say Assad's crackdown on an increasingly armed popular uprising has killed 14,000 people, most of them civilians.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane and that Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself, and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior."

Hague met last week with United Nations and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team. Hague noted Sunday that "The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

In Syria, state-run SANA news agency said gunmen infiltrating from Turkey clashed with Syrian border guards in Rabiah, a region in the coastal Latakia province. SANA said several infiltrators died in the late Saturday clash, while others reportedly returned to Turkey. It said several Syrian border guards were wounded, but didn't specify how many.

Turkey denies sheltering armed Syrian rebels, although many Syrian refugees have fled to camps on the Turkish side of the border.

Syrian activists, meanwhile, said rebels captured a military base in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, confiscating large amounts of ammunition. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 16 government troops died in the attacks on the base near the rebel-held town of Daret Azzeh and nearby checkpoints early Sunday.

Area activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels had removed hundreds of artillery shells from the base. Saeed added via Skype that troops retaliated with intense shelling on the area using helicopter gunships.

On Friday, state media said 25 people were kidnapped by "terrorists" and killed in Daret Azzeh. Activists said the 25 killed were pro-regime gunmen known as shabiha.

Also on Sunday, Syrian opposition groups met in Brussels to hash out differences and plan for a democratic transition. The disparate groups are divided over whether outside military intervention would help or hurt and whether to engage in dialogue with Assad's regime. The conference, attended by some 50 people, will continue Monday.

Jordanian Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah, meanwhile, said Sunday that three other Syrian pilots had defected last week, even before a pilot flew his warplane into neighboring Jordan. He said the other three crossed overland into Jordan. He was unsure if the four pilots knew each other or had coordinated their escape from Syria.

Facebook stock has highest close since May 21

NEW YORK (AP) -- Facebook closes at one of its highest prices since its initial public offering.

The stock rose $1.21, or 3.8 percent, to finish Friday at $33.05. It hasn't closed above that price since May 21, the second day of trading.

The stock finished the week up 10 percent, the second straight week of increase.

Facebook is still 14 percent below its IPO price of $38 a share.

Facebook's IPO has had a rocky ride. Its debut was delayed by trading glitches on the Nasdaq.

Investors have been concerned about its ability to increase revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, though many analysts hold positive long-term opinions.

Facebook, along with investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of dozens of shareholder lawsuits.

PFT: Harvin back at practice for Vikings

New Orleans Saints OTAGetty Images

The floodgates officially are open.

After weeks of silence, which many believed was motivated by fear of additional sanctions from the league office, the coaches who have been suspended as part of the bounty/pay-for-performance program are beginning to speak out aggressively regarding the league?s case against players accused of offering, paying, or receiving money for inflicting injury.

It has begun with Saints interim head coach/assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt.? In the wake of Wednesday?s statement in which he expressed dismay over the sheet of paper that accuses him of putting up $5,000 for the alleged bounty on Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC title game, Vitt elaborated in remarks to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

?There?s gotta be some concerns from the league?s standpoint and anybody?s standpoint about the authenticity of any of these documents,? Vitt said regarding the key piece of paper that apparently lists the money pledged for the 2009 NFC title game.? ?I think that?s a huge concern.? It looks like that document has been falsified or tampered with. What kind of credibility do they have if they take documents like that and show it to players??

He?s right.? The one useful needle in the 50,000-page haystack contains a major flaw.? The notes prepared by a still-unknown person suggest that Vitt ponied up $5,000 to whoever knocked Favre out of the game.? So if as to Vitt the notes aren?t reliable, how are they reliable as to Jonathan Vilma (who is shown as kicking in $10,000) or anyone else?

The league has said that the offer appearing on the notes was corroborated by three people:? Gregg Williams, Mike Ornstein, and someone whom the league won?t name.? But Ornstein has said he didn?t tell the league Vilma had offered $10,000.

Williams hasn?t said anything, but there?s a chance Williams will be emboldened by Vitt?s decision to talk tough.

?I stated from Day 1 to investigators ? and I hope they took good notes ? our players have done nothing wrong. Nothing wrong,? Vitt said. ?Our players never crossed the white lines with an intent to injure anybody.?

Apart from the issue of innocence or guilt (and as I?ll explain during and after today?s PFT Live the issue of guilt or innocence really is a question of semantics), Vitt has a problem with the league?s procedure for passing judgment on the players.

?The bylaws of the National Football League supersede the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights,? Vitt said.? While the players aren?t ?on trial? in the criminal sense of the word (and thus not entitled to the protections of the Constitution), the fact remains that the NFL and the NFLPA have crafted a quasi-judicial procedure for handling matters of discipline without an outside person deciding whether the player did what he?s accused of doing.? And the procedure that the NFL administers must be fair and impartial, especially where the player loudly disputes the allegations against him.

Without a fair process, it?s impossible to get to the truth.? And so people like Vitt have taken matters into their own hands.

?The truth is starting to come out,? Vitt said.? ?[W]e?re gonna keep fighting the fight. We?re not gonna back down.?

Moving forward, it?ll be interesting to see whether Williams or anyone else follows Vitt?s lead in trying to get the truth out, whatever the truth may be.

Insight: Wells Fargo's mushrooming mortgage risk

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - The new center of U.S. mortgage lending is a nondescript office building in the American heartland, far from the California subprime lenders and the New York investment banks that drove the housing market into a bust.

One out of every three home loans in the United States is now funded by Wells Fargo & Co, whose mortgage operation sits in a business park next door to a country club on the outskirts of Iowa's capital city.

Wells Fargo scaled back its subprime lending in 2004, well before the housing crash. That move, and the bank's lack of exposure to investment banking and Europe, is why Wells Fargo was the one major U.S. bank to escape a ratings cut by Moody's Investors Service this week.

But former regulators and banking experts are beginning to worry that the fourth-largest U.S. bank may be becoming over-exposed to the housing market.

It is adding mortgages to its books when the economy is sluggish and interest rates are near record lows, and this could be the best scenario.

If the economy strengthens and rates suddenly rise, mortgages will suffer more than most other loans and the bank's income could be clobbered. Another recession would also hurt the bank, because defaults would rise.

Wells Fargo says it can manage the risk and sees no reason to stop expanding.

It is hiring thousands of loan processors, underwriters, and call center employees, and investing billions of dollars in new loans and tens of millions in the infrastructure to manage them.

"There's no ceiling," said Mike Heid, president of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. "There's no cap on our size."

Investors have long praised Wells Fargo for sticking to traditional commercial and consumer banking while de-emphasizing riskier undertakings like credit derivatives trading.

But old-fashioned banking can be risky too. By expanding so much in the mortgage industry, Wells Fargo is building a potentially dangerous concentration in one type of loan, said Mark Williams, a former U.S. Federal Reserve bank examiner who teaches at the Boston University School of Management.

"What we know is that diversification is extremely important in banking," said Williams, who wrote a 2010 book on the downfall of Lehman Brothers Holdings called "Uncontrolled Risk."

Wells Fargo's Heid said the bank had decades of experience managing risk, and notes that it is expanding at a time when underwriting standards are strict and property values low. Its combined delinquency and foreclosure rate was 6.89 percent at the end of the first quarter, nearly half the rate at rival Bank of America Corp, according to the publication Inside Mortgage Finance.

"It's a really good book of business coming in right now," Heid said.

Aside from the risk to Wells Fargo, the mortgage growth also raises concerns that one company has become dominant in an industry that is so critical to the U.S. economy.

Edward DeMarco, acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said in a speech last month that he would like to see the mortgage market become more competitive.

At the same time, Wells Fargo is a key source of funding for many smaller banks, which issue mortgages and then sell them on to the company and other lenders in a practice known as correspondent lending.

Smaller banks say they have fewer buyers for their mortgages than before the 2008 crisis and that the market would lose a huge source of liquidity if Wells Fargo were to pull back.

"If you are a community bank and depend on Wells Fargo as a correspondent bank, you are unfortunately at their control," said Ron Haynie, executive vice president for mortgage services at the Independent Community Bankers of America.

Correspondent lending may be risky for Wells Fargo, too. It has said that loans written in-house are of better quality than those it buys from other banks, which may be why many of its rivals have backed away from correspondent lending.

Still, Wells Fargo, which got 42 percent of its mortgages last year from correspondent banks, says it chooses partners carefully and has net worth and performance requirements for them.

INDUSTRY PITFALLS

Like the rest of his executive team, Heid, a 24-year company veteran, works from a cubicle in this suburban office. He became co-president of the home mortgage division in 2004, at the same time Wells decided not to offer some of the riskier mortgages competitors were making -- including subprime loans in which borrowers provided little documentation of their income.

"There was a huge chunk of the market that we just consciously chose to not do," said Heid, who became sole head of the unit in a reorganization last year.

The bank's restraint paid off. In 2008, Wells became the top mortgage lender in the United States, a position it had ceded in 2004 to Countrywide Financial, which Bank of America now owns. By 2009, the bank had nearly a quarter of the market, double its market share in 2007, according to Inside Mortgage Finance.

And last year, Wells became the top collector of mortgage payments from borrowers, a business known as servicing.

Wells Fargo also bulked up during the financial crisis by buying North Carolina-based Wachovia Corp in 2008. The deal brought the company a portfolio of risky adjustable-rate mortgages, which it is gradually liquidating, but also gave it a more visible presence on the U.S. East Coast.

The bank is now one of the few investing in the mortgage business, while competitors are pulling back. Wells Fargo plans to add 1,000 loan officers nationally and is looking to hire hundreds of processors and underwriters, some of whom are working on a government program to refinance underwater mortgages. It is also developing new systems for underwriting.

So far, that investment is paying off. In the first quarter, Wells Fargo's mortgage income climbed 42 percent to $2.9 billion from a year earlier, about one-fourth of the bank's fee income. Analysts expect the business to boost second-quarter earnings.

Mortgages have also become a growing percentage of the bank's assets. Wells Fargo has $312 billion in residential mortgages and home-equity loans on its books, representing about 41 percent of its loans, up from 38 percent in 2006. Among large banks, mortgages make up a slightly higher percentage of total loans at Bank of America, but significantly less at Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase & Co and US Bancorp.

Wells Fargo keeps about 10 percent of the loans it makes, and packages the rest into securities guaranteed by government-controlled entities such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the bank has said. It sells the securities to investors.

That percentage is typical of the industry, but with its size, Wells is piling on more loans than others.

The worst-case scenario for Wells Fargo's mortgage business would be a rapid rise in interest rates, analysts said. That would push up its cost of funds, while it would still be earning historically low interest on long-term mortgages, making a large slab of its loans unprofitable.

In the 1980s, U.S. savings-and-loans were felled by such a rate squeeze, as well as risky investments they made, said Lawrence White, an economics professor at New York University's Stern School of Business and a former savings and loans regulator.

Wells can hedge this risk and has a much more diversified balance sheet than the savings-and-loans had, White said. But the bank and its regulators need to monitor the situation closely, he added.

"We need to keep the memory (of the savings-and-loan crisis) alive because with long-lived assets, clearly an interest-rate spike can get you in trouble the old-fashioned way," White said.

But while others pull back, Wells seems to be betting that the U.S. economy and the housing market is on an upswing, or at least will not weaken too much.

"If the market recovers, I think they will be sitting very pretty," said Anthony Sanders, a finance professor at George Mason University and former head of asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities research at Deutsche Bank. "But there is always a concern. We are not out of the woods yet."

FILE - This April 19, 2012, file photo shows Eric Thompson?s Green Bay, Wis., based company, TGSCOM Inc., which sold guns or accessories to the killers in the Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University mass shootings as well as a man who opened fire at a Pennsylvania health club. (AP) ? An online weapons dealer who sold the handgun used in the Virginia Tech massacre and provided equipment in two other mass shootings has quietly closed up shop amid a flurry of complaints from customers who allege he failed to deliver orders after billing them.

Police say Eric Thompson last month abruptly closed his Green Bay, Wis.-based business, TGSCOM Inc., as they probed scores of complaints from customers in nearly every state.

TGSCOM's connections to three mass shootings have drawn national attention in recent years. Seung-Hui Cho used a .22-caliber handgun purchased through TGSCOM when he killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in April 2007. Steven Kazmierczak, who killed five people in a Northern Illinois University classroom in 2008, bought two empty magazines and a holster through a company site. George Sodini, who killed three women when he opened fire at a Pittsburgh-area health club in 2009, bought an empty magazine and a magazine loading apparatus from the company.

Thompson, who has claimed his company generates millions of dollars, has maintained he's not responsible for how people use guns, but he still has had run-ins with federal regulators and now he has dozens of people across the country angry with him.

"It gives everybody who does business online a bad name," said Dennis Johnson, a 60-year-old Web designer in Omaha, Ark. He filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau this month and has started disparaging TGSCOM on his blog after the company billed him almost $70 for two empty magazine cartridges that never arrived.

"(His site) looked reputable," Johnson said. "The guy talked about integrity and all this crap ... pretty rude of him. And meanwhile, where is all the money going? Is he spending it?"

Thompson told the Green Bay Press-Gazette newspaper that he was doing his best to solve his problems and locate investors who could help him reopen. He said he doubted he would face criminal charges.

He didn't respond to repeated calls by The Associated Press to his cellphone and at a residential listing in Suamico, a village of about 11,000 people just north of Green Bay. His attorney also didn't return voicemail and email messages.

The business controlled a number of websites with names like topglock.com and The Gun Source that offered firearms and accessories. It was a gun lover's haven. Its still-functioning Facebook page includes multiple photographs of guns as well as shots of a cumulus cloud shaped like a handgun and a woman in a barely-there bikini top clutching two semi-automatic pistols.

Thompson defended the sales to the three mass shooters, saying any of them could have just as easily bought their gear at a Wal-Mart. He told the AP in 2009 his company is on the forefront of the industry and generated millions of dollars in sales that year, but he wasn't "some backwoods guy just looking to make a buck off of tragedy."

Still, he visited Virginia Tech a year after the shootings there and pressed the school to allow students to carry concealed weapons. He drew support from students but the wrath of university officials and parents, who called the visit offensive and chastised him for selling products designed to kill people.

The business has been beset with problems over the last five years.

The Press-Gazette reported in 2011 that U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives records indicated an inspector found a number of violations at TGSCOM in 2009, including selling a gun without the required waiting period; selling a gun to someone who didn't answer all the required background questions; and failing to maintain proper records. The violations came on the heels of other problems the ATF detected at the company in 2007, including selling ammunition to an underage customer, the newspaper reported.

Bob Schmidt, a spokesman for the ATF's St. Paul, Minn., field office, which regulates Wisconsin firearms dealers, declined to comment, saying he is prohibited from speaking about specific dealerships.

The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau has catalogued nearly 200 complaints from consumers in 44 states between January and this week accusing the business of charging them but failing to deliver on their orders. The bureau issued an alert about the company on June 1, urging TGSCOM customers to contact their credit card companies and dispute payments to the business.

The Green Bay Police Department began investigating the business in May . At the end of the month, Lt. Kevin Warych said, Thompson closed the business. Over the last few weeks detectives have identified as many as 40 victims and have been talking with prosecutors about potential charges, Warych said. The FBI is reviewing the complaints as well, said Leonard Peace, a spokesman for the agency's Milwaukee office.

In the meantime, Thompson is going through a bitter divorce. His wife filed documents in early June in the case calling the business the largest asset in the proceeding. She questioned Thompson's "motivation and intent" in operating the business and accused him of failing to explain why he closed it.

She said in the filings she has hired an expert to assess the company's value and asked a judge to place the company under control of a third party that would analyze the situation. In a voicemail she left for the AP she said she hasn't been involved in the company for years and letting her husband run it was a "bad choice." She didn't immediately return a follow-up call.

DeAnn Perzel, the 40-year-old Chamber of Commerce president-elect in Sparta, Wis., ordered $250 worth of what she called "girly" equipment ? pink laser sights, pink gun cases and pink camouflage ? from TGSCOM in early January for a women's hunting raffle at the end of February. The merchandise didn't arrive in time for the raffle, she said.

Some of the products finally arrived, triggering a back-and-forth with the company to return them and get a refund that lasted for weeks, she said.

"They should be out of business," Perzel said. "They're terrible."

All too often the pets of abuse victims become the target of the abuser. This is a control mechanism not only the victim, but for the pet as well. It has been known to be extremely violent and deadly. Children and pets are helpless and vulnerable in these cases, they are pawns in the hands of the abuser.

A program that helps the victim to protect his/her (yes there are male victims) beloved animals, while removing themselves/their children from the site/situation of abuse is something that should be available everywhere.

Windows Phone 8 updates coming over the air, early access to 'registered enthusiasts,' 18 month support program announced

Windows Phone 8 updates coming over the air, early access to 'registered enthusiasts,' 18 month support program announced

Tired of plugging your Lumia 900 into your PC or Mac in order to apply software updates? Tough luck -- you'll still be doing it while future buyers snack on Windows Phone 8. Harshness aside, Microsoft made clear at today's Windows Phone Summit that all WP8 updates will be delivered over the air, with an available program to give "registered enthusiasts" early access prior to broad consumer pushes. The real kicker, however, is this line: "Devices are supported with updates for at least 18 months." For those keeping count, the Lumia 900 shipped here in the US on April 8th. Two months later, it's already confirmed that the flagship WP7 handset in America won't get Windows Phone 8. We'd also like to take this opportunity to remind you just how poorly an identical promise from Google went over in May of 2011. You may remember Andy Rubin confessing that an 18 month Android update program was being put into place at Google I/O 2011, and here we are -- halfway through 2012 -- and we've still heard zero details on how that's being policed. Pardon our skepticism, but we'll need to see it to believe it.

Phillip Phillips Speaks on Surgery

He may have spent months on the American Idol stage, earning millions of votes in order to be crowned the 11th champion in series history, but Phillip Phillips is not anxious for a break.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since undergoing kidney surgery, the singer said he's sick of recovery and excited to perform in front of fans this summer on tour.

Phillip Phillips oon the Red Carpet

"I've kind of been going crazy just looking at the four walls surrounding me," Phillips said, adding that he loves to sleep, but he's ready to be active once again.

Phillips has mostly just been "resting and recovering" since the June 7 procedure, but he can pick up a guitar now, which bodes well for his presence at the July 6 tour opener in Detroit.

"I'm pretty confident," he says of joining the nine other Idol finalists as they visit various cities over the next couple months. "I'm just going to have fun with it ... It's going to go well, I believe."

Deep in the Milky Way in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion) lies the War and Peace Nebula, or NGC 6357 [1], a region of space where new stars are being born in of chaotic clouds of gas and dust [2]. The outer parts of this vast nebula have now been imaged by ESO's Very Large Telescope, producing the best picture of this region taken so far [3].

The new picture shows a broad river of dust across the centre that absorbs the light from more distant objects. To the right there is a small cluster of brilliant blue-white young stars that have formed from the gas. These are probably only a few million years old, very young by stellar standards. The intense ultraviolet radiation streaming out from these stars is hollowing out a cavity in the surrounding gas and dust and sculpting it in strange ways.

The whole image is covered with dark trails of cosmic dust, but some of the most fascinating dark features appear at the lower right and on the right hand edge of the picture. Here the radiation from the bright young stars has created curious elephant trunk columns, similar to the famous "pillars of creation" in the Eagle Nebula (opo9544a - http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/opo9544a/). Cosmic dust is much finer than the more familiar domestic variety. It more closely resembles smoke and consists mostly of tiny particles of silicates, graphite, and water ice that were produced and expelled into space by earlier generations of stars.

The bright central part of NGC 6357 contains a cluster of high-mass stars whose inhabitants are among the brightest in our galaxy. This inner region, not seen in this new picture, has been much studied and imaged by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (heic0619 - http://www.spacetelescope.org/news/heic0619/). But this new picture shows that even the less well known outer parts of this nursery contain fascinating structures that can be revealed by the power of the VLT.

This image was produced as part of the ESO Cosmic Gems programme [4].

Notes

[1] The curious name, which has no link to Tolstoy's great novel, was given to this object by scientists working on the Midcourse Space Experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midcourse_Space_Experiment). They noted that the bright, western part of the nebula resembled a dove, while the eastern part looked like a skull in their infrared images. Unfortunately this effect cannot be seen in the visible-light image presented here. The object is also occasionally nicknamed the Lobster Nebula.

[2] NGC 6357 was first recorded visually by John Herschel from South Africa in 1837. He only recorded the brightest central parts and the full scale of this huge nebula was only seen in photographs much later.

[3] The part of NGC 6357 shown in the new VLT image has not been targeted by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

[4] The ESO Cosmic Gems programme (http://www.eso.org/public/outreach/gems.html) is an outreach initiative to produce images of interesting, intriguing or visually attractive objects using ESO telescopes, for the purposes of education and public outreach. The programme makes use of small amounts of observing time, combined with otherwise unused time on the telescopes' schedules so as to minimise the impact on science observations. All data collected may also be suitable for scientific purposes, and are made available to astronomers through ESO's science archive.

More information

The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

ESO is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. It is supported by 15 countries: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries. ESO also plays a leading role in promoting and organising cooperation in astronomical research. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor. At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory and two survey telescopes. VISTA works in the infrared and is the world's largest survey telescope and the VLT Survey Telescope is the largest telescope designed to exclusively survey the skies in visible light. ESO is the European partner of a revolutionary astronomical telescope ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. ESO is currently planning a 40-metre-class European Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope, the E-ELT, which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky".
